Who are these love birds?

She is Nancy Lubbers, 87, and Melvin Lubbers, 91. On January 6, 2022, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. South Dakota residents have decided to celebrate this wonderful wedding beautifully in their family garden.

Her youngest grandchild and a professional wedding photographer, Anna Behning captured the event. 

“My grandma took great care to preserve her wedding gown. I suggested that she wear her wedding dress again. My grandpa’s Korean War army uniform was my mom’s idea.” Said Anna.

First meeting

They met at a local roller skating rink in Mitchell, South Dakota, when Nancy was just 16 and fell in love at first sight. Nacy enthusiastically accepted Melvin’s marriage proposal at a ballpark in town. 

“Melvin is an attractive man. I was impressed by him. I still recall the date” Nancy recalled her past. She gave him a loving glance. “Nancy was a very shy girl. She seldom spoke to me.”

On January 6, 1952, the teenage sweethearts married at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, South Dakota. The wedding dress was purchased from Jarold’s Shop in Mitchell for $35 and the veil for $15. Melvin wore a pinstripe suit, and Nancy’s bouquet was full of red roses. They held a simple ceremony in the church’s basement with a small meal, cake, and ice cream.

Although Melvin got their wedding ring from Knodel Jewelry in Mitchell, South Dakota, he always joked that they got it from a gumball machine.

Unfortunately, the newlyweds could not enjoy a honeymoon since Mervin was summoned to service in the Korean War three weeks after their wedding and had to undergo four months of basic training. After arriving home, the couple had barely ten days together before Melvin was transferred to Japan for more training. It turned into eight months of fighting as a Sergeant and tank commander in North and South Korea during the Korean War.

There were no telephone facilities like now, and written letters were their sole means of communication, making it challenging to keep in touch. However, their separation would not last long, as Melvin would soon return from battle. And oh, they did life begin! And with that, the beginning of life! Melvin had a hobby farm that included sheep in addition to his career as a salesperson. Nancy worked at a grocery store.

“We had a large family of five. Four daughters and one boy. We now have a total of 12 great-grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.” She boasted, with a smile on her face. Duane Lubbers, 67, Lori Heier, 65, Dee Dee Konrad, 64, Dawn Gerlach, 62, and Melissa Schutte, 54, are now their five children.

“My wedding gown is special to me. I preserved and kept it safe. I never imagined being able to wear it again. I must congratulate my granddaughter for hosting such a celebration.” Nancy stated.

“I will never forget the day when we exchanged our vows.” He was glad she was wearing her original bridal gown again.

“In marriage, one partner can do something the other disapproves of. Respect one another. When your partner is wrong, forgive and forget.” Nancy explained about their happy married life.

Similarly, Melvin added, “When you disagree, you sit down and discuss it. Once a solution is found, it’s not brought up again.”

Melvin added, smiling, “It drives me crazy when she whispers and I can’t hear her.”  And Nancy said, “He drives me crazy when he teases too much, which makes me very upset.”
