Famous Grammy-winning singer Shakira is about to face a trial at a Spanish court over alleged tax fraud. The Public Treasury of Spain alleged that the singer has violated the tax laws of Spain and failed to pay a huge sum of tax money that is worth over $15 million. A judge in Barcelona ordered that she is to be prosecuted under Spanish Law. Spanish prosecutors assume that Shakira was either unable or intentionally did not pay the income tax for the period between 2012-2014 when she lived in Spain.
However, during an interview with Elle last month Shakira denied all these allegations saying, “I paid everything they said I owed even before they went into court”. Shakira’s lawyers stated that most of the time during the stipulated period, Shakira was in the Bahamas as her residence is located there. Her attorneys further stated that Shakira is willing to come to an agreement with Spanish authorities on this regard despite the allegations against herself.
Often referred as “Queen if the Latin Music”, Shakira was born in Colombia and achieved a rare feat by selling over 80 million copies of her music albums. She was named top female Latin artist of the decade twice by Billboard.
Shakira had shared 12 years of marriage life with Gerard Pique who was the center back of FC Barcelona. The couple started dating in 2010 and have two kids together. Forbes listed Shakira and Gerard as one of the most powerful couples in the world. However, they ended their relationship this year.
