What comes to mind when you witness a mother elephant carrying her dead baby to perform her funeral rites? The cub perished at Twyfelfontein Country Lodge in Namibia; the mother is depicted holding the cub with her trunk.
William Stegmann, a representative for Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, claims that this baby elephant was born to an elephant herd near the Huab River on October 27, 2022.

“The calf wasn’t very strong from the first day. The calf had to walk a long way with the herd to get water. This was hard for the calf. We think she may have died by the evening.” Said, William.

“The only time the mother put the child on the floor was to feed it. She did her best to keep the child safe. But she lost in the end. She might be unable to handle this.” He said it sadly.

Elephants are incredibly clever and gregarious creatures and can swiftly and efficiently recognize a great deal of information. Elephant mothers tend to their offspring for approximately two years after birth. Because of this, it can be challenging for a mother elephant to come to terms with the death of her offspring
